What Is ‘The Apprentice’ About?

According to its official synopsis, “The Apprentice” delves into the darker aspects of American power. It follows young Donald Trump’s rise to prominence, facilitated by a Faustian bargain with Roy Cohn, a powerful right-wing lawyer and political strategist.

The film claims to draw inspiration from real events in Trump’s life and career.

Viewers at Cannes noted a particularly graphic rape scene involving Trump and his ex-wife Ivana Trump. As described by Variety, the scene starts with Ivana (played by Maria Bakalova) showing Trump a book about female orgasms. The interaction soon turns hostile, leading to a violent encounter where Trump assaults her.

‘The Apprentice’ Release Date

There is no official release date for “The Apprentice” yet. Following its Cannes premiere, the film is currently available for sale.

Trump’s Response to the Movie

Reacting to his portrayal in the film, Trump and his campaign labeled it as “garbage.” Campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung announced plans to file a lawsuit to counter the “blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers.”

“This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked,” Cheung stated, according to the Associated Press.

Director Ali Abbasi addressed the controversy at Cannes, saying, “I don’t necessarily think that this is a movie he would dislike or like. I think he would be surprised. I’ve offered to meet him and discuss the movie’s context, perhaps even arrange a screening and a chat if anyone from the Trump campaign is interested.”
